AQIP Overview & History

What is AQIP?

Launched in July 1999, the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) is an alternative process through which an organization can maintain its accredited status with The Higher Learning Commission. AQIP’s goal is to infuse the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of colleges and universities in order to assure and advance the quality of higher education. AQIP allows an organization to demonstrate that it meets The Higher Learning Commission’s Criteria for Accreditation and other expectations through sequences of events that align with the ongoing activities that characterize organizations striving continuously to improve their performance. By sharing both its advancement activities and the results of these actions with AQIP, an organization develops the evidence necessary to support and assist the organization in achieving the distinctive higher education mission it has set for itself and the evidence to enable the Commission to make a public quality assurance judgment.

Year 0

Complete AQIP Constellation

  • Survey designed to help institutions look at themselves from a systematic quality perspective and to determine areas of potential improvement
Year 1

Attend Strategy Forum

  • Attend every four years
Year 2

Submit first action project updates

  • Submit annually for 3-4 ongoing action projects
Year 3

Submit institutional Systems Portfolio for a Systems Appraisal

  • Submit every four years
Year 4

Receive Systems Appraisal

  • 35-45 page Systems Portfolio feedback report
Year 5

Attend AQIP Strategy Forum

  • 6-12 campus members including the President and a Board of Trustee member
  • A four day intensive workshop for developing action projects and synthesizing feedback from the institutional Systems Portfolio
Year 6

Quality check-up visit

Year 7

Reaffirmation of Accreditation

  • Seventh year-accreditation is awarded based on achievement of the above items
